LeCount Holmes, Jr.

In his tribute to one of America’s Greatest Orators...
“Frederick Douglass:  The Man”

"I was born on February the 15th, 1817. My birthgiven name was Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey. My mother, whom I only knew for a short while of my life, was a slave. My father, whom I never knew, was a white man. You see to me my mother was a mystery...and my father was a myth. ...We create our present by the influences of our past. Our past has been created and it can never ever be erased...."

"What I wanted most as a boy was...to learn how to read. The wife of the man who claimed he owned me, secretly taught me how to read. I can recall that day so vividly when Mr. Ald walked through the door and noticed that his wife was teaching me how to read--had been teaching me for a year.

He slammed the door and he said 'You can't teach no colored how to read! Not in my house! ..Not ever in my house!'

...But he was too late. By that time I had

already learned enough to keep teaching myself!"

-Frederick Douglass
